  • POS hardware are the devices you need to build out the checkout counter at your retail store. This can include your cash register, payment hardware, barcode scanners, receipt printers, and more.

    To get started with Shopify, all you need is a Shopify card reader to accept payments and a tablet or smartphone to run the Shopify POS app. From there, you can build out your POS to meet your store’s needs by connecting compatible hardware accessories like barcode scanners, printers, and cash drawers.

  • A POS terminal is another way of referring to payment hardware. POS terminals read credit or debit card information and allow merchants to accept card payments from customers.

    On Shopify, you can accept tap or chip payments using a fully integrated card reader that connects seamlessly to Shopify POS.

  • To take payments on Shopify POS, we recommend using Shopify’s card readers. Using Shopify’s first-party payment hardware allows you to accept tap and chip payments with quick payouts and consistent rates from Shopify Payments.

    For hardware accessories like barcode scanners or receipt printers, you can check to see if your existing hardware is compatible with POS.

  • Even without a Shopify card reader, you can still use Shopify POS to record cash transactions. If you are using a third-party payment provider, payments processed using an external terminal cannot be integrated with Shopify POS. Those sales can be manually tracked and reconciled in POS.

  • When payments are integrated, it means there is a direct connection between your POS and payment terminal. As items and taxes are tallied up in the cart, that total is pushed automatically to the card reader where the customer completes their payment. Once the transaction is complete, the POS will register the payment and close the sale.

    You can integrate payments with Shopify POS using a Shopify card reader. This increases accuracy and reduces the risk of errors that come with manually running transactions through an external terminal. And because payments are automatically registered in the app, there is no need to reconcile numbers between your POS system and payments provider at the end of the day.
